Fighting the one percent is a tough gig, but thankfully Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders now has a new, luxurious Lake Champlain beachfront estate to relax at and rest up from his failed bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Seven Days, “Vermont’s Independent Voice,” featured the socialist senator’s new $600,000 home away from home on North Hero Island, where he will kick back with his wife and take in the property’s 500 feet of lakefront “facing Vermont, not New York.”

Bernie Sanders birdSanders closed on the four-bedroom home last Tuesday in a trip to the town of roughly 800 in which he also posed for pictures at the local Hero’s Welcome General Store, according to the news site.

“We’ve traveled up to the islands many times over the years – almost always on day trips,” wife Jane O’Mera Sanders wrote in a statement to Seven Days. “We’ve been impressed with the North Hero community, eaten at the North Hero House and Shore Acres and have suggested them to friends who were looking for a beautiful place to stay or have dinner. St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle La Motte is my favorite church and it is nearby.”

The island getaway is Sanders’ third home, with others on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. and in Burlington, Vermont, according to the news site, which pointed out that the Hero’s Welcome General Store already has a sandwich named after their newest resident.

Seven Days reports:

The store, a bit south of his new abode, serves a sandwich called “Feel the Bun” in the senator’s honor. The $6.99 deli delight consists of a “HUGE” homemade roll, sliced turkey, fresh apple chutney, hot pepper relish, lettuce, tomato and provolone cheese.

“It’s not fair that the Billionaire Class controls 99 percent of the bread,” the menu description reads. “Here’s a sandwich for the rest of us … to keep us nourished until everything cool is free!”

“He’ll be a welcome neighbor, everybody up here loves him,” Hero’s Welcome owner Robert Camp said. “We’re all ornery and so is he!”

Sanders’ newest real estate acquisition, of course, didn’t go unnoticed.

“Man of the people: @berniesanders buys $600k summer home in Vermont,” Emily Cahn tweeted with a link to the Seven Days story.

“The socialist has a ‘summer home,’” user Inferno Jones tweeted, “lol y’all got clowned as always.”

I, Hoebot.” tweeted a picture of Michael Phelps in Olympic gear, hood up and headphones on, with a scowl in his face and the message: “When you find out Bernie Sanders just used your $27 donations to buy himself a new summer home.”

“How’s that capitalism working out for ya?” Tim Rosales tweeted. “Bernie Sanders buys a $600k summer home in North Hero.”
