A 94-year-old World War II veteran returning home from the store was followed into her garage and beaten for her purse, Chicago police say.

Navy veteran Josephine Regnier was attacked by a man at her Garfield Ridge home on Wednesday, and he fled in a stolen SUV, West Side Patch reports.

The woman “suffered three fractured ribs, a black eye, a possible concussion and other injuries and is in serious but stable condition” at the Edwards Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital.

The attack occurred in broad daylight at 11:50 a.m. on December 7th.

“This man just came in the gangway and assaulted her, beat the s— out of her, took her purse and ran,” the woman’s daughter, Judy Dusk, tells ABC 7.

The video appears to show the suspect ditching the stolen SUV after crashing into a dumpster.

The pizzeria is offering a $5,000 reward for the man’s arrest.

According to Patch, the suspect is described as:

  • an African-American man
  • between 25 to 35 years old
  • about 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds
  • having a beard and last seen wearing a brown leather jacket

“She’s 94 years old. He didn’t have to beat her up. He could have just taken her purse and left. I don’t know what compelled him to do that. He’s a coward,” Dusk says.

Anyone with information about the identification of the suspect is asked to call the 8th District Police Department at (312) 747-8730.
