A fire department administrator thinks American flags waving from the back of trucks look ridiculous and even went so far as to compare it to the actions of ISIS.

“They look like a bunch of yahoos,” Fire District Chairman Fred Gralinski said of Coventry, Rhode Island firefighters at a recent board meeting, according to News 10.

“Like in the paper, like ISIS in Syria going to take over a city. I don’t think they need that big flag on the back of the truck. That’s not America to me. Those are a bunch of terrorists. So, I’m going to ask you to take the flag off the truck.”

The fire department union, amid a contract dispute with the city, is taking umbrage with the statement.

“The members are very upset,” union president David Gorman tells the news station. “I have a couple members, armed service retired, retired from the guard.”

Gralinski backed off his statement somewhat, saying he used a “poor choice of words” and apologized for “an perceived disrespect of the flag.”

The fire district recently adopted a new policy, requiring permission to add a flag or decal to department trucks.

They say they want to first check “with the military” on flag protocol before they are displayed.

Gorman claims the city wants them off the trucks, period.

“All that has to happen is for someone that wants to put a sticker or decal on the first truck to go to the board and ask for permission,” fire district spokesman Gregg Perry says.
